Thank you for attending the parish breakfast last Sunday. The 7th and 8th grade class appreciates your support of their 8th grade retreat and OMSI Submarine fieldtrip. We thank Sheila VanGrunsven and the other helpers for organizing the cooking and the dish cleaning, and for providing us with a fabulous breakfast.
Tomorrow, Jan. 17th, we will be having a school wide lockdown drill to rehearse safety procedures. I encourage parents to talk to your children about the lockdown drill to relieve some of the anxiety students may have. Also the following are some resources that may help you talk with your children about recent events and how to keep safe. http://www.cmionline.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/10/Talking-With-Your-Children-About-the-Sandy-Hook-Elementary-Shooting.pdf and http://www.nasponline.org/resources/crisis_safety/terror_general.aspx
If an event requires a full or partial lockdown at Visitation, parents will be notified using our SchoolReach Emergency Contact System as soon as the initial lockdown procedures are completed. On Thursday morning, I will be using our Emergency Contact System to notify families of the completion of our lockdown drill. Every family should receive a phone call from the school. If you do not receive a phone call or a message, please contact the school secretary so that the numbers in the system can be verified.
Our on-going service project for the month of January is pop tab collections for Ronald McDonald House Charities of Oregon and Southwest Washington. Money received from the collected tabs (pop, soup, and other tabs) will help provide temporary housing to families of children who are hospitalized due to serious illness. Students have until Thursday, January 31st, to collect and bring in the tabs for our contest. The school goal is for 100 lbs. of tabs to be collected. As in past years, days of free dress will be given for the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place classes bringing in the most tabs by weight per student and for meeting the school goal.
The school Geography Bee will be held Friday, January 18th, at 12:30 PM in the gym. The fourth through eighth grade finalists will be competing for the honor of being school champion and moving on to the district level. All are invited to join us.
Catholic Schools Week is coming quickly. We hope you and your guests can join us for Special Friends and Grandparents Day on Wednesday, January 30th. We will be having a Mass hosted by Visitation Alumni at 8:30 AM in the morning, special activities for students, parents and their guests from 9:15 AM to 10:00 AM in the Parish Center, a school performance at 10:30 AM, and then lunch with our Special Friends and Grandparents at 11:15 AM. As in other years, students bring or pre-purchase lunch for their special guests, and cake and coffee is provided for all. The students look forward to sharing these activities with you and their guests. We hope you can join us!
Thank you for your support of Visitation Catholic School!
